Belated Wednesday Wrapup: 10/4

Filed under: Wednesday Wrapup — devp @ 10:20 am

This week, we used Wushu to play out an adventure in the campy style of classic fighting games such as “Mortal Combat”. In our story, the mysterious EnSyn Corporation summons the world’s greatest fighters to square off for the ultimate prize. A motley crew of fighters (including a Korean schoolboy/gangster, a Russian professional wrestler, and the secret Princess of Madagascar) basically levelled the entire fighting arena through the power of their action movie cliches.

Wushu is a fun and highly improvisational storygame; on the other hand, the level of on-the-fly description required can be outright exhausting. (But in a good way!)

I also wanted to mention that we’re thinking of having a special themed night for the 25th, to celebrate (the Wednesday before) Halloween! Hopefully we can cook up some spooky storygames for the night. Got any suggestions?

  1. You could always run a (playtest? not sure where he’s at with it at present) session of Vincent’s “Afraid”…

Man, I’ve gotta get out of my standing Wednesday commitment one of these weeks.

  2. Afraid! That’s a fine idea…

I look forward to meeting up with you some time. Hopefully we’ll get a weekend gathering going on some time, for the many non-Wednesday folks.

  3. T’would indeed rock. I’m sure I’ll manage a Wednesday sometime soon, though. We’ll see how tonight’s session goes, as this one of the pair of campaigns that’s going on has been rather hit-or-miss for a while; it might be time to get a little variety in my Wednesdays.

This fall just seems full of possibilities I can’t quite manage; JiffyCon 06 turns out to be the weekend after we close on our new house, so I doubt I’ll have the free time to get there, either, what with the moving.

  4. I’ll offer two suggestions:

    (i) ‘Don’t Rest Your Head’ by Fred Hicks is Dark-City-meets-Doom-Patrol, ie. my kind of urban fantasy and could definitely make for a tight game.

(ii) Jared’s ‘UnSpeakable’ hack which turns InSpectres into a Cthulhoid horror game. Might be fun for a more gonzo pre-Hallowe’en experience.

    Just some thoughts.

  5. “Don’t Rest Your Head” would be a fantastic fit.
